    Noted local historian Tom Hester will explore the demographics and cultural dynamics of early Silver City. In 1880, Silver City was emerging confidently from its silver-rush beginning. A railroad would soon back into town. An ore reduction plant could assure prosperity. The great war had become a memory and the fierce opposition of the Apache was in decline. The 1880 census described the world converging on roaring Silver City, population 4,500. Who was there? Silver City had German brewers and bakers. Cornish and Chihuahuan miners. Jewish hotel owners. Cantonese cooks and gardeners. An English immigrant trained as a circus performer was a Grant County map maker. By some measures, the town arguable showed less potential fifty years later. Could it be that industrial, modern America spelled the loss of qualities that had breathed success into a dusty frontier town? Or did that 1888 crowd chasing out Chinese residents reveal a dark side that held it back all along?
